  65. powerful database.  It includes spell checking.  Search for any
  66. text contained in all your documents.  You can give your documents two

  69. first few characters of one of these names, or search for text contained

  125. ===== Installation =====================================
  126.  
  127. If the Document Database files are compressed into a single file
  128. such as DOCDB100.ZIP, you must first uncompress that file into a single
  129. directory on your hard disk, using the PKUNZIP program, the WINZIP
  130. program, or some other program that can "un-zip" files.
  131. After uncompressing follow the directions below.
  132.  
  133. To install Document Database, first start Microsoft Windows. Make
  134. sure no other programs are started, such as virus-checking programs or
  135. FAX programs.  Other programs can interfere with the installation.
  136.  
  137. From the Windows Program Manager, select the File menu.
  138. If you have Windows 95, press the Start button instead.
  139. Then choose RUN.
  140.  
  141. In the RUN box, type the drive and directory containing the uncompressed
  142. ("un-zipped") installation files, followed by \SETUP and then press
  143. the Enter key. For example, if you unzipped the DOCDB100.ZIP file into a
  144. directory named DOWNLOAD on your C drive, you would type:
  145. C:\DOWNLOAD\SETUP in the RUN box, and then press the Enter key.
  146.  
  147. The Setup program will then take over.  After it starts, it will ask you
  148. where to install the program files.  The drive and directory are already
  149. filled in with C:\DOCDB.  This is usually where you want to install the
  150. files, so just press Enter and the installation will continue.  The
  151. installation program will copy the files to their proper places and
  152. create a Document Database program group and icons in Windows for you.
  153.  
  154. After installation, you should click on the Document Database Help icon
  155. and read each of the topics listed in the Help file.
  156.  
  157. If you want to make "normal" installation diskettes which simply
  158. require the user to run the setup program without unzipping the file
  159. first, you will need two diskettes.  Unzip the DOCDB100.ZIP file to a
  160. hard disk, then copy all un-zipped files except DOCDB.HL_, AMERICAN.VT_
  161. and MSAJT200.DL_ to the first diskette.  Copy these three files to the
  162. second diskette.  The setup program will prompt the user to insert Disk 2
  163. when required.
  164.  
  165. It is possible to install Document Database without using the setup
  166. program, although you would not want to unless you encounter some
  167. problem with the installation.  If you do encounter some problem
  168. installing Document Database, MAKE SURE NO OTHER PROGRAMS ARE
  169. RUNNING WHEN YOU INSTALL DOCUMENT DATABASE.  You may even want to end
  170. Windows, then restart it, then close any programs that Windows may
  171. automatically run upon start-up.  Other programs running is the most
  172. common cause of installation problems.
  173.  
  174. To install Document Database manually (as a last resort), all of the
  175. files on the diskette which have names ending with ".DL_" and ".VB_" and
  176. ".38_" need to be expanded into your \Windows\System directory. You also
  177. need to create a directory named "DOCDB" and expand the other files from
  178. the diskette to this directory.  You need to install every file that
  179. ends with an underscore character (_).  To install these files, you need
  180. to use the EXPAND.EXE program which comes with Microsoft Windows.
  181. The syntax for running this program is:
  182.   EXPAND sourcefilename destinationfilename
  183. Replace "sourcefilename" with the drive and file name of the file on the
  184. diskette, such as A:VBRUN300.DL_ and replace "destinationfilename" with
  185. the drive, directory, and file name of the expanded file, which in this
  186. example is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VBRUN300.DLL
  187. The last 3 characters of all files that end with "DL_" become "DLL".
  188. The last 3 characters of all files that end with "VB_" become "VBX".
  189. The last 3 characters of all files that end with "EX_" become "EXE".
  190. The last 3 characters of the file that ends with "HL_" become "HLP".
  191. The last 3 characters of the file that ends with "38_" become "386".
  192. The last 3 characters of the file that ends with "MD_" become "MDB".
  193. The last 3 characters of the file that ends with "VT_" become "VTD"
  194. Therefore, to install the VBRUN300 file, you type the following command:
  195.   EXPAND A:VBRUN300.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VBRUN300.DLL
  196. To install the MSCOMM file, you must type the following command:
  197.   EXPAND A:THREED.VB_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\THREED.VBX
  198. To install the help file, you must type the following command:
  199.   EXPAND A:\DOCDB.HL_ C:\DOCDB\DOCDB.HLP
  200. This last command assumes you already created a directory called
  201. DOCDB, because that is where the expanded file will be copied to by
  202. the EXPAND program.  You do not need to install any files that do not
  203. end with the underscore character.
